A beginners guide to makeup: Different types of makeup brushes & how to use them

There are many types of makeup brushes, and sometimes as a beginner, we are confused on what to use on our face. Others are just using their bare hands or using one type of brush for all products; which is not good by the way as you’ll end up putting too much product in it that you won’t achieve the exact look that you wanted.

So girls, to make it easy for you, here is the list of different types of makeup brushes and their uses:

  • Foundation Brush

Flat top Kabuki Foundation Brush

A foundation brush is mainly used for our base product or simply to apply foundation on our face. It helps us to give a smooth application of our base and is also good for blending the product in. Foundation brush can also be used to buff the product into our skin.

  • Concealer Brush

A concealer brush evens out our concealer and also use for spot correction. When using a concealer brush, always remember to pat out the product into the skin and do not blend it in.

  • Stippling Brush

A stippling brush can also be used for our base. It can apply the product smoothly and let us achieve that airbrushed look. The stippling brush is also good for applying other products aside from our base. You can use it to apply bronzer, blush, and powder. This brush is good for both cream and powder products.

  • Angled Blush Brush

As the name implies, this brush can be used to apply blush product into our skin. The angled blush brush can give a precise application of a blush makeup to our cheeks.

  • Powder Brush

The powder brush can be used to set or dust a loose or a compact powder product to our skin. This brush can also be used to touch up our makeup without moving the other products that were already set. You can get this beautiful set of unicorn brush from amazon. 🙂

  • Angled Brush

The angled brush is perfect to use for eyeliner and eyebrows application. This brush has a precise shape to create a straight line most especially on your brows. For me, this brush is a staple in every makeup kits.

  • Contour Brush

The contour brush targets areas to contour and shape. Some of us may use an angled blush brush for contouring, but this brush has actually firmer bristles than a blush brush thus perfect for a precise application of a contouring product.

  • Highlight Fan Brush

This brush is perfect for applying highlighter, it only picks up a small amount of product that we can dab into our face. Please make sure to use only with a light hand when dabbing the brush into your face.

  • Blending Brush

This brush is a must have for everyone. It is mainly used for eyeshadow blending and softens any harsh lines. Always remember, the secret to a perfect eye makeup look is to blend, blend, and blend!

  • Eye Liner Brush

Ever wonder those perfect eyeliner on those Instagram pictures? Well, the key to getting that look is the eye liner brush. It applies perfectly and precisely, as well as it only pick-up the exact amount of product to use.

  • Eyeshadow Brush

Eyeshadow brush is perfect for cream and powder eyeshadow application. It picks up a decent amount of product and packs it into our eyelids, perfect to get that shimmer on your lids!

  • Bronzer Brush

A bronzer brush is a rounded brush that can be used to achieve a natural bronzed look. It distributes the product evenly to allow us to achieve a buildable sunkissed glow. As the name implies, this brush is mainly used for applying bronzers to our cheeks.

  • Lip Brush

Some of us may think we don’t need lip brushes as we can apply lipstick directly to our lips. However, if we want to line our lips for extra definition, a lip brush is good to use. You can also use the lip brush to fill in lip color from lipstick palettes or fill in those lines.

For me, these brushes are a must haves in your makeup kits as a beginner. There are many types of makeup tools that we can use to apply makeup, but brushes are the most important as they help a lot in making our makeup application smoothly and precisely.

Great post. It really explains all the necessary tools to get started with makeup. I remember when I started with makeup in my early 20s a couple of years ago, I only used one big fluffy powder brush and it was my mom’s! I didn’t even wear blush! It was 4 years later that actually got myself a set of brushes and when my makeup game improved.
I also really like your multicoloured brushes. Where can I get them?
