My best face primers review

Today, a friend asked me what makeup primer I would recommend to her. This made me suggest some of the primers that I already used and made me think, why not make a post about it. When I first started doing makeup, I never knew that primer exists. I was always okay with just the use of face powders and a lip tint, and that used to be my everyday makeup look back in college. When I started working in the hotel industry, my supervisor told me on my first day at work “you need to define your eyebrows and add color to your eyes”. That statement changed my whole life (LOL, thanks to you sir C), I discovered more about makeup, followed makeup tutorials on youtube, and eventually the following weeks I already went to work with smokey eyes and bold lips. 😀

With the makeup industry fast evolving and beauty influencers popping in on Youtube and Instagram, I discovered more about makeup products and how you can actually make your makeup last longer. The first step, makeup primers. Here are some of the best makeup primers I used and recommend:

  • Too faced HangoveRx Replenishing Face Primer

I got this one as a sample from either my Sephora Play Box or Ipsy. As soon as I saw it on my kit, girl, I was so excited to try it. The full-size product is $32 and they also have it in travel size for $15. This is my go to primer when I’m out all night partying LOL.

This primer has coconut-water, probiotic-based ingredient, and skin revivers. I guarantee you, your makeup will last all night without your foundation melting; even if you dance all night too. I will probably buy the full-size product as soon as I finish the 2 sample sizes I have.

  • Cover Fx Illuminating Primer

I got this primer from my Sephora play box too as a sample, well pretty much all the primers that I will review here came from my play box. Yes, thank you, Sephora!

I like this primer as the base adds more shine and highlight before you put on your foundation. This is what I wear if I want to get that extra glow. I usually use it either for a day or a night out, both works whenever you want that glow girl! This is also one of the primers that I will buy in full size. Right now, I have a little bit left on my sample size and I am pretty sad about it (sob*sob). This retails for $38 at your favorite beauty store, not unless you have points and discounts 😉

Below are the swatches, on the left side is without flash and the right side is with flash.

  • The Porefessional by Benefit

This one I use on a rare occasion, only if I feel like going for a matte look. This primer is actually good to minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines. I have a combination type of skin, and my pores are not that big enough either thus this primer is only helping me if I wanted a matte finish. It is silky smooth to apply and according to reviews, it’s one of the best primers for oily skin. The full size retails for $31 for a .75 oz/21g.

  • Milk Makeup Blur Stick

This primer I use for a daily makeup if I want to cover up some imperfections. This is also the primer that I can easily reach as it is just located in the mini drawers that I have on my vanity table. This is easy to use as you don’t need your hand to apply it on your skin; it comes on a tube stick that you can just twist and glide it on your skin. You can also use this for a matte finish. it is soft on your skin and won’t clog your pores. Retail price is $36 for 1oz/28g.

  • Clinique Pep-Start

Alright, this is the last primer on this review and probably the least liked among the rest. I use this one if I want extra moisture for my skin. It’s like a primer and moisturizer in one. It’s a 3.5 out of 5 ratings in Sephora, and that is mainly my thought too. For me, it’s alright kinda in between the best and the worst, and the only thing that I do not like about this primer is the smell.

Some great suggestions here. I’m always looking for new and recommended beauty products so was interested to read what you’d said about the best primers. I do have quite oily skin (and fairly large pores) so would definitely be interested to try the Porefessional product. I have a few other of Benefit’s products and have always loved them.

I’m also looking for a primer to put on eyelids – can you recommend any of these?

Yes, i love the benefit porefessional primer!

As for the primer for eyelids, you can try the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion it is really good. Or sometimes, a concealer will do the trick as well! 🙂

Thanks for this. I have tried many primers, and I am always looking for other to try. I am a benefit girl, but I have never tried any of their primers. So, guess what I will definetly try Benefits pore professional. I have extremely oily skin and large pores so this is a must try for me. Thanks for sharing.

Great post. I always love hearing what other people are using when doing their warrior paint lol
My go-to primer for 3-4 years now is Hourglass’ Veil Mineral Primer. It’s hella expensive and makes my wallet cry, but I make sure to get it during the annual Sephora winter sale and the Jumbo size as it’s cheaper per ounce. I still want to find a cheaper primer but it needs to be mattifying and fragrance-free. I recently got the supposedly dupe for Hourglass, the NYX Angel Veil and I’m still on the fence about it. It’s Made in China so I’m not so sure it’s great for my skin. Do you have any other recommendations? What do you think of the NYX Angel Veil?

P.S. And yeah that Clinique Pep Start primer/moisturizer sucks. I broke out from it.

do you break out easily if you use other products than what your skin is used to? I haven’t tried the NYX angel veil myself as I have other primers that I need to finish first so I can’t really voice out my opinion about it. I found another blog that compared the hourglass and the NYX one, – maybe that can help you decide:)

my go-to primer is the too faced hangover, it’s the best primer I tried so far!
